The deployment of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope’s solar array will be its first, and most important. Small but efficient, the 5900mm (19.36ft) long solar array will release itself like an accordion to a straightened configuration shortly after launch. Its purpose is to convert sunlight into electricity to operate the telescope’s propulsion and communication subsystems, as well as its scientific instruments.
